Home, sweet home

In their second road trip of the season the Seattle Mariners went just 1 and 5 while being out scored 37-15. That one win came against the Houston Astros where Felix Hernandez recorded his 100th win on a 7-1 victory over their American league west foe. After that disastrous it was great to be back in the confines of Safeco field.

At approximately 7:10 this evening Rookie picture Brandon Maurer took to the pitching mound looking for his second win of the season. He pitched 6 strong innings before running into some trouble in the 7th where he hit a batter. Maurer was lifted with one out in the 7th and 2 runners on base. Carter Capps came in and quickly was able to induce a double play to end the inning. Carter Capps pitched the 8th where he managed to get the batters out in order. Then Tom Wilhelmsen came in for the 9th making quick work of the Angels giving Brandon Maurer his 2nd win.

On the offensive side for the Seattle Mariners the game got off to a good start as Endy Chavez hit a single to lead off the game. Kyle Seager flew out and Kendrys Morales hit into a double play. Thus ending such a promising starting to the 1st inning.

The 2nd inning went 1-2-3 as Justin Smoak struck out before both Dustin Ackly and Kelly Shoppik hit fly ball outs. It was look as though the struggles were going to continue for the Mariners.

The 3rds inning saw the third longest home run ever to be hit during a regular season game at Safeco field as Carlos Peguero hit a 451 foot blast to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. The good fortune in the 3rd continued as Jason Bay hit a single. Robert Andino hit a fly ball out before Endy Chavez put the Mariners back on track with a single. Kyle Seager came through with a single to score Jason Bay. Bad luck continues for Kendrys Morales as he hits into another inning ending double play but not before the Mariners take a 2-0 lead.

The next three innings see the Seattle Mariners go in order despite a single in the 6th inning. With Brandon Maurer pitching a good game it stays 2-0 Mariners.

The 7th inning starts off seeing Justin Smoak get work his way on with a walk. Dustin Ackly hits a single giving fans hope for more runs. Kelly Shoppik hits a sacrifice moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Carlos Peguero is then sent down to 1st on an intentional walk. Jason Bay hits a single to bring in 2 runs before Robert Andino hits into an inning ending double play. The 7th ends with the Mariners leading 4-0.

The 8th starts with Endy Chavez once again getting a single. Kyle Seager comes through one more time as he belts a 2-run home run. Kendrys Morales gets his first single but it is a futile effort as Dustin Ackly hits into a double play. Kelly Shoppik strikes out to end the inning but not before the Mariners take a 6-0 lead.

Tom Wilhelmsen pitches the top of the 9th getting the Angels out in order to hand the Seattle Mariners a victory in their return home.

Review: Memories with Maya

“Memories with Maya” by Clyde Dsouza is a technology thriller, with some romance and erotica, that will take you on an intense journey along with Daniel, Krish and Maya as take virtual reality to new heights. Just as I was, you will find yourself totally absorbed in the adrenaline rush of developing cutting edge technology, the secret romance that is fed by the closeness that this augmented reality technology provides and the tragedy when human greed becomes involved. You will find hope in that sometimes even out of our tragedies we can find inspiration to continue what we started in a new and wonderful direction.
The main character in the book is Daniel who dreams about creating an augmented reality universe. He manages to take his dream as far as he can with his limited resources. The next step is to contact an old friend that has resources and the talent to bring his dream to fruition. Together they are able to create augmented reality googles they call “Wizer”.
The book is about so much more then just creating a new augmented reality technology or keeping a relationship alive in the face of a tragedy that looks like the end. Just as with many great books “Memories with Maya” goes beyond telling just the main story with its many sub-plots and has a message interwoven throughout the story. A good example of one of these sub-plots and one of my favorite parts is Daniels work at the night club where he mixes his love technology with his love of music. The message that technology can be used in many areas but it can be a double edge sword when humans get involved and use it for unintended applications.
Mr. Dsouza does a great job on so many areas: He shows us the way the creative process is born from the recesses of the creative mind, refined through interactions and brought into the real world through the hands of people that are skilled at their craft. You can relate to the dialog between the characters as the way that you might talk to your network of friends and business partners. The characters are well developed and believable as people that we might meet in our everyday lives.
“Memories with Maya” comes in both paperback and e-book. The version I read was in e-book format on a kindle. The pages fit well for good readability with good separation between the paragraphs to show when there was a transition. The one drawback was the lack of page numbers which is not all that bad.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone that loves having the latest gadgets, enjoys romances that beyond the confines of human bounds and the enjoy of a well written book. If you match any of these then this is one book that will provide you with hours of enjoyment. Because of some of the content I would recommend this book for a more mature audience.

Felix Hernandez loses his bid for win 100

Tonight at Safeco field we were witness to an epic battle as Felix Hernandez took to the mound in search of his 100th win. In order to register the career milestone he would have to accomplish it against the best hitting team in the American league. At 8 wins in this young season the Detroit Tigers have a fearsome lineup that would tear most pitchers apart.
In the top of the first Felix started out with two strike outs showing why he is called the King. The Tigers fight back with a single to try and mount a threat. Felix strikes out the next batter to quickly dowse the Tigers fire. The Seattle Mariners go in order in there half of the first as the Tiger pitcher keeps pace with Felix.
The King picks up where he left off and gets the Tigers in order in the second. Unfortunately for the Mariners, the pitcher for the Tigers again keeps paces with a 1-2-3 inning of his own. The next two innings are about the same as the only base runner is Franklin Gutierrez with an infield single in the fourth.
The top of the 5th inning shows the first sign of trouble as Brendan Ryan has a ground ball take a bad hop off of the heel of his glove for an error. The next batter hit a double to give the Tigers runners at 2nd and 3rd. A sacrifice gives the Tigers a 1-0 lead before Felix gets out of the inning. The Mariners look like they will tie the game when Justin Smoak walks and Jesus Montero gets a base hit. The threat dies when Dustin Ackly hits into a double play to end the inning.
The game stays the same until the Mariners half of the 7th inning when a leadoff double by Michael Morse and single by Raul Ibanez tie the game at 1. Both pitchers get through the 8th inning fairly quickly.
Tom Wilhelmsen comes in to pitch for the Mariners in the top of the 9th where he gets the Tigers out in order. The Mariners look as though they will win when Kendrys Morales leads off with a single. Michael Morse follows it up with a walk before Raul Ibanez hits into a double play. Justin Smoak strikes out to send the game into extra innings.
Tom Wilhelmsen gives up a single in the 10th but gets out of the inning. The Mariners mount a mini threat when they get two runners on via walks. The threat is soon dowsed as we go to the 11th. Carter Capps takes over in the top of the 11th where he gives up a single sandwiched between two outs. Oliver Perez took over the pitching duties with 2 outs in the 11th and was able to get a fly ball to end the inning. The Mariners go in order in their half of the 11th.
The Tigers mount a mini threat with two on via a walk in the top of the 12th. Perez strikes out the next two batters to end the 12th. The Mariners manage a single in their half of the inning but go no further. Charlie Furbush starts the 13th for the Mariners and strikes out the side with one walk sandwiched in the middle. The Mariners get a single in their half of the inning.
Charlie Furbush stays in to start the 14th where he gives up a single and a walk. He is then replaced by Blake Beaven who gives up a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. The Tigers get a run on a ground ball to short for the first out. An infield pop up keep the runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. A fly ball ends the top of the 14th with the Tigers leading 2-1. Raul Ibanez leads off the Mariners half of the 14th with a fly ball out. Justin Smoak gets a single to start the Mariners fans cheering. With 2 outs Dustin Ackly hits a ball all the way to the base of the wall but Justin Smoak is thrown out trying to score from 1st. The game end with the Detroit Tigers winning 2-1 in a 4 and a half hour game.

The Texas Rangers outlast the Seattle Mariners

Tonight we were treated to a pitching duel for the first 4 and a half innings. In the bottom half of the 5th the Seattle Mariners were finally able to get to Texas Ranger starter Alexi Ogando with a leadoff double by Kelly Shoppach along with singles by Dustin Ackly and Jason Bay gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the 6th the Ranger start off with a single and then on a ground ball, that looked like it would be an easy double play, went off of the end of Brendan Ryan's glove for an error. After a strike out Joe Saunders intentionally walked Adrian Beltre to load the bases. Joe Saunders was able to get Nelson Cruz to hit but not before the tying run scored for the Rangers.
After 2 outs in their half of the 6th inning the Mariners mounted a threat with a single by Kyle Seager and a walk to Kelly Shoppach. A fly ball by Dustin Ackly ended the inning and the Mariner threat.
Carter Capps took to the mound in the 8th inning for the Seattle Mariners. He doesn't have his usual stuff as he gives up a leadoff walk. He gets 2 quick outs but then back-to-back hits give Texas a 2-run lead. Carter Capps gets the next batter to end the inning.
The Mariners go in order in their half of the 8th keeping the game 3-1 Texas Ranger. Oliver Perez takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners in the top of thew 9th where he gets the Rangers out in order. The Rangers bring in their closer Joe Nathan and he quickly gets the Mariners out in order giving the Texas Rangers a 3-1 win.

Hisashi Iwakuma gets a win for his 32nd birthday

As Hisashi Iwakuma gets set to take the mound for the Seattle Mariners there were two questions on the minds of Mariners' fans. Will Iwakuma be able to end the three game losing streak? And will the Mariners be able to make it through a game without losing another player? The answer to both questions was yes.

Tonight Hisashi Iwakuma celebrated his 32nd birthday by pitching a strong 6 and 2/3 innings as he struck out 6 and only walked 1 on 90 pitches. It was three innings before the Texas Rangers even had a hit against Iwakuma. That one hit accounted for the only run the Rangers would get as Ian Kinsler hit a home run. Iwakuma was able to get the next five batters out until giving up a single with 2 outs in the 5th inning. In the 6th inning Iwakuma gave up a hit but was able to get the next three batters out. Iwakuma had 2 quick outs in the 7th inning before manager Eric Wedge pulled him.

Charlie Furbush takes over with 2 outs in the 7th inning were he gives up a hit and walks a batter. Now, with 2 runners on and still 2 outs Eric Wedge takes charlie Furbush out of the game. Stephen Pryor comes in and gets a strike to end the Ranger threat.

Stephen Pryor stays in the game to pitch the 8th inning. He starts out by getting the first batter to hit a fly ball out. Then he gives up a single before getting another fly out. Another single and another fly out ends the inning. Stephen Pryor manages to get through the inning without giving up a run keeping it 3-1 Mariners.

With the Mariners still leading by 2 runs Eric Wedge brings Tom 'the bartender' Wilhelmsen in to close the game. Giving his best performance yet Tom Wilhelmsen gets 3 fly outs to get his 4th save of the young season. Tom Wilhelmsen's performance breaks the Mariners three game skid and gives Hisashi Iwakuma a win for his 32nd birthday present.

On the offensive side for the Seattle Mariners they did all the damage they needed in the 1st inning. It didn't start off to well as Endy Chavez hit a fly ball for a quick out. Yu Darvish hit Jason Bay with a pitch to put him on 1st. Kendrys Morales hit a single moving Jason Bay down to 2nd. Raul Ibanez gets a single to score Jason Bay. One out later Kyle Seager gets a double to score both Kendrys Morales and Raul Ibanez. Kelly Shoppach strikes out to end the inning but not before the Mariners get their 3 runs.

Review: Mystical Speed by Hubert Guscott

Mystical Speed by Hubert Guscott is a wonder read that will transport you 11 years into the future. Once you arrive in the year 2024 you will join my boys; Leroy, Trini, Joe, White Shoes and Long Pants; as they journey to Jamaica to discover the secret of the Jamaican's dominance of track & field. From the time that the boys first arrive in Jamaica you will be pulled into their world. You will feel as though you are there with them as they go through training, discover some of the rich, diverse culture and mysticism of Jamaica.
The author fills the book with a number of characters that we can all identify with in our lives. There is Carolina, the mentor whose patients the boys occasionally take to the breaking point, Ranny, Carolina's brother and the boys protector, Brother Fancy, a fast talking con man, The Grandmaster, a mysterious person that keeps an eye on every, and many more characters that you will meet over the course of your journey.
Mr. Guscott does a great job with the addition of humor into the book. One of the best examples of how he incorporates humor is when during a going away party one of the boys misunderstands a comment by one of the other guest. When he reveals his mistake it throws the entire room into a gale of laughter. Mr. Guscott also does a wonderful job at mixing in some the folk lore that is ingrained in Jamaican culture.
The book come in both paperback and in e-book formats. I read my copy on a Kindle and the layout of the book was beautiful. Many times with electronic versions of books the pages aren't configured right to fit on the screen and the page numbers are usually missing or scattered but not so in Mystical Speed. It was easy to read with each page fitting perfectly on the screen.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is a fan of track, the supernatural or just a wildly entertaining book with some life lessons mixed in will enjoy this book. They will find Mythical Speed is a book that they will want to savor every word to absorb every nuance of the book.

Seattle, we have a problem

After yesterdays win Seattle fans where riding high coming into tonight’s game. With a a rookie picture starting the game for the Mariners we were really sure what we would be in for but nothing could prepare us for what we saw. The first start off with three straight singles before the first out was recorded. Carlos Pena hit a double and J.D. Martinez hit a single before the second out was recorded. A single, a walk and double saw the end of the game for Brandon Maurer. Kameron Loe took over with 2 outs and quickly was able to get a fly out. The top of the 1st was finally over but not before the Astros sent 11 people to the plate making it 6-0 Houston. The Mariner half of the inning went quick as they went 1-2-3.
The 2nd inning seemed that it would be better as Kameron Loe was able to get a quick fly out. It wasn't to be though as the next batter hit a home run. The next batter hit a single and then another home run made 9-0 Houston. Kameron Loe managed to get the next two batters out to end the top of the 2nd. The Mariners go in order again.
The 3rd inning was more of the same as Kameron Loe gave up a home run. Two outs later he walked a batter and gave up 2 more singles. The next batter makes an out but not before Houston takes an 11-0 lead. The Seattle Mariners once again go in order in their half of the inning.
Charlie Furbush takes over the pitching duties in the 4th and gets two quick outs. Things quickly change as Furbush gives up a walk and a home run to make the score 13-0 Houston. The next batter grounds outs to end the top of the 4th. The Seattle Mariners' half of the 4th finally saw Eric Bedard in some hot water. Bedard gives up a single to Michael Saunders and the walks two of the next three batters to load the bases. Jesus Morales hit a fly ball to end the 4th with the score 13-0 Houston.
The 5th starts with Charlie Furbush walking the first batter. A single and a walk load the bases with no outs. With the bases loaded Charlie Furbush gets a fly out, a strike out and a ground out to keep the score 13-0 Houston. It is the first inning that Houston doesn't score. Paul Clemens takes over for the Astros and gives up a single to Dustin Ackly. Robert Andino gets a double before Brendan Ryan hits a sacrifice fly. Jason Bay takes Guti's spot and hits a single. Michael Saunders hits a sacrifice fly to score Andino. Raul Ibanez pinch hits in for Kendrys Morales and walks. Michael Morse flies out to end the 5th with a score of 13-2 Houston.
Lucas Luetge takes over the pitching duties in the 6th where he promptly gives up two singles. The next batter hits into a double play and a run scores. Luetge strikes out the next batter to end the top of the 6th with a score of 14-2 Houston. The Mariners go in order in their half of the 6th.
In the Astros' half of the 7th Lucas Luetge does what none of the other Mariner pitchers had been able to do tonight and gets the Astros in order. The Mariners' half of the 7th looked like it would be a repeat of the 6th as both Robert Andino and Brendan Ryan were two quick outs. Jason Bay hit a home run to give the Seattle Mariners their 3rd run of the game. Then Michael Saunders hits a ground ball to end the inning with a score of 14-3 Houston.
The top of the 8th sees Lucas Luetge give up a double and two singles as Houston adds to their lead. With two runners on and no outs Luetge manages to get the next three batters to hit pop ups. The top of the 8th ends with the score 15-3 Houston. The Mariners' half of the 8th starts of with both Raul Ibanez and Michael “the beast” Morse hitting home runs. That is all of the scoring as Justin Smoak, Jesus Montero and Dustin Ackly all hit fly ball outs. The 8th ends with the score 15-5 Houston.
Oliver Perez takes over the pitching duties in the top of the 9th. Perez promptly gives up a home run making it 16-5 Houston. The next batter gets a single but that is all the Astros. The Mariners' half of the 9th started off with Robert Andino hitting a fly ball out. The inning started looking up once Brendan Ryan hit a single and Jason Bay walked. Michael Saunders hit a fly ball out taking some of the wind out of our sails. Raul Ibanez hit an RBI single giving us a glimmer of hope. Michael Morse hit a ground ball that should have been the third out but it turned into a 2-base error that brought a run in. Justin Smoak kept the inning going with a 2-run single. A ground ball by Jesus Montero ended the rally but not before the Mariners scored 3 runs.
The final score 16-9 Houston.

There is no place like home

Tonight as we entered Safeco field for the Seattle Mariners 37th home opener we notice that this year was going to be different. When we get into the seating area the first thing we notice is the mammoth screen that has been added showing us larger than life images. Then we notice there is something about the field itself that looks different. We take a second look and see that the fences have been moved in by a few feet in hopes of more home runs.
Once we look around at the field we sit down to watch all of the opening day festivities. We aren't disappointed as there are fireworks, a short concert by a local band and introductions of the player, coaches and the clubhouse staff. Once that hoopla was over it was time for the national anthem. A children's outreach choir from the capitol city of Olympia did a very nice rendition of our National Anthem.
Next came the ceremonial pitch that saw the return of two fan favorites in Jamie Moyer and Dan Wilson. The 50-year-old Jamie Moyer took to the mound and threw a low and outside pitch to Dan Wilson. Then as the two former Mariners walked off the field it was finally time to start the game.
The Houston Astros are up to bat first. Seattle Mariners' pitcher Joe Saunders takes to the mound and threw a strike. The first batter ended up flying out bringing plenty of cheers from the fans. The next batters walks into the box and hits a single. Joe Saunders doesn't let having a runner on bother him as he strikes out the next two bringing the top of the 1st to an end. Now, it is The Mariners turn as Michael Saunders steps into the batter's box. He hits a single and then quickly steals second. Franklin Gutierrez steps up next and flies out. Kendrys Morales walks up to the plate next and gets a single bringing Michael Saunders home. Then Michael Morse and Kyle Seager both fly out ending the firstwith a 1-0 lead for the Seattle Mariners.
The second starts with Joe Saunders getting two quick outs before giving up a single. He gets the next batter to hit a ground ball to end the top of the second. The Mariners half of the 2nd goes quick as Justin Smoak and Jesus Morales both fly out. Then Dustin Ackerly steps in and grounds out to end the 2nd.
The Houston half of the 3rd goes quick as Joe Saunders gets them out in order. In the Mariners half of the inning Brendan Ryan hits a fly ball for the first out. Michael Saunders steps up next and just as he did in the 1st he gets a single. He steals second again as Franklin Gutierrez strikes out. Once again Kendrys Morales comes through as he hits a double to make it 2-0 Mariners. Michael Morse hits a fly ball to end the 3rd.
The 4th goes quick as both sides go in order.
In the top of the 5th Joe Saunders gives up a bases hit. The next batter hits into a double play to erase the runner. Then a walk and a single gets Saunders into his first jam of the game. With two runners on base Saunders gets the next batter to ground out to end Houston’s half of the inning. Now, it is the Mariners turn at bat. Dustin Ackerly and Brendan Ryan both get singles. With two runners on Michael Saunders flies out. Franklin Gutierrez gets a hit bringing Dustin Ackerly in to make it 3-0 Mariners. Kendrys Morales walks to load the bases. Michael Morse continues having a bad day as he hits into a double play to end the inning.
The 6th goes quickly despite Houston getting a single. The Mariners go 1-2-3 in their half of the inning.
The 7th starts out with Joe Saunders giving up a single. He strikes out the next batter before he is pulled for a relief pitcher. Carter Capps comes in and gives up a single before getting the next two batters out ending the top of the 7th. The Mariners half of the ending goes fast despite Michael Saunders reaching base by an error.
In the top half of the 8th carter Capps strikes out the first two batters. He is then pulled for Charlie Furbush who comes in and gets a strike out to end the Houston half of the inning. In the bottom half of the 8th the Mariners go in order.
Tom “the Bartender” Wilhelmsen comes in for the 9th. Unlike his last time this outing he has his usual good stuff and promptly gets three outs to end the game. The Seattle Mariners win their home opener 3-0 over the Houston Astros earning Wilhelmsen another save.

Chicago was good to the Seattle Mariners

After losing two straight games to split their series in Oakland the Seattle Mariners moved on to Chicago to start a 3 game series against the White Sox. The change in scenery was just what the Mariners needed as they won the first game of the series. It wasn't an easy win though as it went 10 innings and only a one run win.
The first inning started off with a high not as Franklin Gutierrez hit his second leadoff home run of the season. The next three batters made outs to end the inning. In the bottom half of the inning Blake Bevin took the mound for the first time this season. He did a great job as the first two batters made outs. An error by Kyle Seager gave the Whites Sox a runner. The next batter flew out ending the first.
The second inning started as Jesus Montero stepped into the batter's box. Three straight out soon ended the Mariners half of the inning. Blake Bevin was able to get three quick outs to keep the game at 1-0 Mariners.
In the 3rd inning with one out Brendan Ryan got a hit giving us a glimmer of hope to add on to the lead. It wasn't to be though as the only other base runner we would get in the inning was a Michael Saunders walk sandwiched between two strike outs. The White Sox went in order making for a quick inning.
In the 4th inning the only base runner was Kyle Seager as he reached on a walk after two outs. Kyle Seager was caught trying to steal second ending any Mariner threat. The White Sox tied the game in the bottom of the 4th with back to back hits after two outs.
The 5th inning was wild as Jason Bay started off with a double. Singles by both Dustin Ackerly and Brendan Ryan, a double by Franklin Gutierrez, a triple by Michael Saunders and two more singles by Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse gave the Mariners a 6-1 lead. The White Sox retaliated with there own barrage of hits in the bottom of the 5th to make it 6-5 Mariners.
The Mariners top of the 6th went quick as the batters went 1-2-3. The White Sox went quietly in their half of the inning despite having one runner. The 7th was another quick inning for the Mariners. The White managed a tie in their half of the inning. The 8th and 9th went quick as both teams went in order.
We went to the 10th inning where Franklin Gutierrez started off with a single. Two batters latter Kendrys Morales hit a double to score Guti. Jesus Montero struck out but then both Kyle Seager and Jason Bay got hits. Kendrys Morales scored but Jesus Montero was thrown out at home plate. With a 2-run lead it was time for Tom Wilhelmsen to save the game. Wilhelmsen though didn't have his usual great stuff he ended up walking three players along with giving up an RBI single. He managed to hang on and squeak out a save as the Mariners won the game at 8-7.

The third game wasn't a charm for the Seattle Mariners

After winning the first two games down in Oakland to start the season, the Seattle Mariners experienced their first lose. Watching the great performances from Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma we were starting to think that the Mariners just might go 162-0 for the season. It didn't take to long though in this third game before we were brought back to Earth only to realize that our team isn't going to win all their games.
With the umpire saying play ball Franklin Gutierrez stepped into the batter's box and promptly hit a home run. We all cheered thinking this was going to end up the same as the previous two games. The next to batter both flew out before Michael “The Beast” Morse stepped up to the plate. We all cheered for “The Beast” and he didn't let us down as he hit a home run to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. Then Justin Smoak flew out to end the top of the inning. Now, it was time to see what Joe Saunders could do as he took the pitching mound. Despite giving up a double he made it through the first unscathed.
The second started out with promise as Jesus Morales hit a single and Jason Bay walked. Then Robert Andino stepped in and hit into a double play. Brendan Ryan was up next and struck out to end the top of the inning. The bottom of the inning wasn't any better as Joe Saunders gave up a double and then a walk. The next batter hit into a double play but then a single gave the Athletics a run. With the bases now empty the next batter hit a fly ball that dropped infront of Jason Bay. Mr. Bay made a great relay to Kyle Seager and then he promptly threw the ball to Jesus Montero and tagged the runner out at home plate.
The third inning was dismal for the Mariners as they went 1-2-3 at the plate. When Joe Saunders took the mound at the bottom of the inning he promptly gave up a double and walked the next two batters. Then a sacrifice fly tied the game. The next two batters made outs to keep the game tied.
The forth didn't fair too much better for the Mariners with the only hit being a single by Jesus Montero. The bottom of the forth saw Joe Saunders giving up a walk and single to the first two batters. Then after getting the next two batters out he gave up a 2-run double giving Oakland a 4-2 lead.
The fifth was another 1-2-3 inning for the Seattle Mariners. Joe Saunders' day was over as Mr. Loe took over pitching duties. The Athletics were able to get a single but no more.
The sixth inning went 1-2-3 for both teams keeping the score at 4-2 Oakland. The seventh was another 1-2-3 for the Mariners. In the bottom of the inning saw Oakland get 2 home runs making it a 6-2 Oakland lead. That ending up being the final score of the game as Oakland won keeping a tie in the opening series still possible as the two teams play the final tomorrow at 12:35,

Windows 8 gains markets share but still behind Windows Vista

Felix Hernandez gets his first win of the season

Another year, another opening day at Oakland with Felix Hernandez pitching and another win. It has become a familiar sight for Mariner fans the past few years. It has also been a sight that we hope to see for years to come. There is nothing that gets a true fan more excited then to see 'The King' take his rightful place on that mound to pitch the first game of the year.
We were sure what to expect from the Mariners' offense when the started off the game at bat. Franklin Gutierrez stepped up to home plate and struck out. Then Micheal Sanders and Kendrys Morales followed suit and also struck out. It wasn't looking to good for our team. Then Felix walked up to the mound for the bottom half of the first causing any disappointment, in the way the game started, disappear. We cheered as 'The King' throw out his first pitch. He quickly made work of the first three Oakland batters.
As the second inning started and Micheal Morse struck out our hopes were dashed once more. We held our breath as Justin Smoak came up to bat wondering which version of him will show up. Then he walked as we all let out the breath we have been holding in ever since he stepped in the batter's box. Kyle Seager was up next and gave us hope as he had a base hit moving Justin Smoak down to second. With two runners on and only one out Jesus Montero steps up and quickly hits into a fielder's choice. With runners at second and third Dustin Ackerly steps up to the plate causing our hopes to soar. He flies out to end the top of the second with the score still at nil. Then Felix takes the mound for the bottom of the inning. He promptly gets the first players to hit a ground ball to third base. Then, he strikes out the next two batters, in a sight we have grown familiar with from 'The King'.
The third and forth innings are both pretty similar to the second inning as neither side scored. The fifth inning starts with Jesus Montero grounding out we all thought it was going to be another scoreless inning. Then Dustin Ackerly walks, Brendan Ryan doubles and Franklin Gutierrez hits a single. Suddenly, it is 2-0 Mariners and we all start to celebrate knowing that with “The King' on the mound we can't lose. He makes quick work of the athletics in the bottom of the fifth.
The sixth inning goes by quickly with neither side reaching base. The seven starts with both Jesus Montero and Dustin Ackerly making two quick out. Brendan Ryan walks and steals second giving us all hope that more scoring is about to come. Franklin Gutierrez flies out and the scoring opportunity is gone. Felix takes the mound for the bottom half of the seventh and promptly gets two outs. He gives up a double and walk making everyone nervous. The manager, Eric Wedge, comes out and pulls Felix out of the game. Charlie Furbush takes over and gives up a walk to load thew bases. He gets pulled and replaced by Stephen Pryor who gets the next batter to ground out.
The top of the ninth goes quick as Kyle Seager, Jesus Montero and Dustin Ackerly all strike out. When the bottom of the inning starts we see Tom 'The Bartender' Wilhelmsen walk up to the mound assuring us of a win. He gets two quick outs but then gives up a walk making the game look like it is in danger. He manages to get the next batter to hit a fly ball to end the game for his first save of the season.
