Review: For Love or Loyalty

For love or loyalty by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is a piece of historical fiction that will take you on an emotion roller coaster ride as we follow the adventures of Malcolm MacGregor and Lauren Campbell. Buckle up because this ride start quick when Malcolm and his brother Thomas arrive home only to find it in ruins and the evil land Baron Duncan Campbell has kidnapped their mother and sister. You will find your emotions surging as you feel Malcolm's rage as he plots his revenge against the Campbell clan and the rescue of his loved one that have been shipped off to the American colonies to be sold into indentured servitude. When Malcolm takes Lauren Campbell and sets sail from Scotland to colonial America you will find your heart strings tugged as you read about the conditions of those destined for indentured servitude and Malcolm's feelings for Lauren that make him question his plans for revenge. Once they arrive in America you will find your emotions pushed to the limit as Lauren tries to keep her faith as she is thrown into the world of indentured servitude. You will find it hard to put the book down as you find yourself emotionally invested with the need to know what will happen next. Will Malcolm be able to rescue Lauren, his mother and sister?
The period language, well written dialog and rich descriptions do a great job of bring the characters and settings to life. As you read along your mind will be flooded with images Malcolm, Lauren, the people they meet on their travels and the places they go on their quest.
The discussion questions that the author provides at the back of the book make it great for a book to be read as classroom material or as part of a book club.
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes historical fiction or a student of our country's past. They will enjoy the way the author depicts life of immigrants coming to colonial America. The one caveat is there are a few moments of violent acts that might not be for some younger readers. These moment are rare in the book but are needed since a big part of the book deals with a violent subject in our country's history.

Review: Dark Biology

Dark Biology by Bonnie Doran is a romantic, suspenseful and out this world science fiction novel that will keep the reader well engaged from beginning to end. In its page you will follow the adventures of the Hildebrant family from rival siblings Hilde and Chet as they try to one up each other in their work for the CDC to their parents Worth and Laura as they tour the country giving lectures. Just like a dramatic cliffhanger each chapter takes you right to the edge and compels you to read the next chapter to find out what will happen next. It is long before the first breath taking events happens when one of Hilde's co-workers has a problem with her protective gear. The problem is soon rectified and the co-worker is fine. That is only a small taste of the thrills that are to come later.
Ms. Doran gives us a fine supporting cast of characters that most of can identify with as people that we have meet in our lives. There is Dan , a born leader that is always ready and will to face new challenges with one exception of making a long-term emotional commitment to the woman he loves. There is Larry, the commander that is willing to put to sacrifice himself for those under his command. Jasper, the person that is always making jokes and finding the bright spot in any situation no matter how bleak. Frank, the person that always tries to prove himself but things don't always go as planned.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that loves science fiction and/or suspense. The people fitting into either of these categories will be captivated with all the action that takes us from the lab of the CDC to the international space station.

The United States military wants to bring super armor to real life

For generations fictional literature has had suits to give ordinary people special abilities. There were the underwater suits in 20,000 leagues under the sea, the super armor from Starship Trooper and the super suit that gave Tony Stark super abilities in Iron Man. Some of these like the underwater suit have eventually become real-life items. Soon the United States military could bring the super armor into reality. The suit, will be called Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit or TALOS for short, will provide the soldier wearing it to have super human strength, the ability to impervious to most gun fire and act as a portable tactical computer that would keep the soldier connect to headquarters through a wide area network or WAN.
"I'm very committed to this, I'd like that last operator that we lost to be the last operator we lose in this fight or the fight of the future, and I think we can get there," said U.S. Special Operations Command chief Admiral William McRaven to industry representatives gathered at Special Operations Center of Command (SOCOM) headquarters in Tampa Florida In July, according to Foreign Policy.
The U.S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command (RDECOM) is currently looking into finding a contractor that can bring together the resources needed to develop all the technologies needed to create the TALOS. Considering all the aspects required for the TALOS it will take combined resources across universities, government labs and the private sector. Bring all of these different sources together will make this one of the single biggest operations since DARPA and others created the Internet in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
The decision comes down to outfitting several soldiers quickly, Tinsley said. "SOCOM will try and adopt some of the more realistic things first, like integrating power supplies into the suit to reduce the need of mobile batteries," he said. "Some of the more futuristic things may be pushed off to the side."

Review: The transhumanist Wager

The Transhumanist Wager by Zoltan Istvan is a philosophical mind expanding experience. In the pages you are confronted by fictional people and events that represent a culmination of arguments and struggles that had plagued humans for decades. Each pages is filled with choices to be made, metaphors about life lessons and sacrifices that some people make to hold on to an ideal. As you read on you might come to realize that what we believe isn't always so black & white and the lines can easily get blurred as to which is the right path to follow. A good example of just how blurred those ideal can be is the coming-of-age story that weaves its way through the book as we follow Jethro Knights and Gregory Michaelson as they make choices that shape their lives and the consequence that they find go along with those choices.
Mr. Istvan does a great job at making the interactions between his characters believable and with rich dialog that brings richness to his story. One such example are the discussions that take place between Jethro Knights and Dr. Zoe Bach as their relationship blossoms into love, separate to travel their separate path and finally re-united. There are many other such rich interactions, such as, when our protagonist, Jothro Knights, finally comes face-to-face with the antagonist, Reverend Belinas and they get into a long philosophical discussion over their differing beliefs.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is a student of philosophy, science fiction or just wants to understand more about the conflicts that all of us as humans struggle with in our daily lives. Whichever of those categories you fit into there are several lessons to be learned as long as you look at this book as an entanglement of stories and ideals represent the human race as a whole.

Who will be the next CEO of Microsoft?

Who will be the next CEO of Microsoft?

Review: John Smith: The last known survivor of the Microsoft wars

John Smith: The last known survivor of the Microsoft Wars by Roland Hughes is not your typical post-apocalyptic piece of fiction but also a well written piece of philosophy. There are no AI programs, killer robots, zombies, mutants, alien invasions or even nuclear war. It is a quick reading book that teaches use lessons of how that current events, human greed and not paying attention to our past can be the downfall of civilization. The story follows John Smith as Susan Krowley interviews him, about the Mixcrosoft Wars, after his bunker is discovered. At times you might not fully grasp what is being conveyed in the answers that Mr. Smith gives but as you read it will become more clear urging you to read on to discover what other lesson are to be learned in the pages of this book. As you read on you will also find yourself questioning some of the things you have always taken at face value in today’s society.

Mr. Hughes' book reminds me of reading Plato's books Phaedo and Meno. When you first start it is not what you are expecting and you kind of question why you are reading it. Just like those books once you do read a few pages you realize that you are getting much more out of the page than you though possible. Just as Plato sometimes confused his students before they would gleam the lessons he was teaching them, John Smith would some times confuse Susan Krowley with the answers to her questions.

One of my favorite aspects of the book how it ties in what many of us just consider totally made up fiction and points out how that many of them were based on some kernel of truth. One example of this is when John Smith mentions how that the submarine in the book 20,000 leagues under the Sea is based on stories of submarines that the people of Atlantis built thousand of years earlier.

I would recommend to anyone to enjoys philosophy, history, fiction or just studying human nature. No matter which one of these genres you prefer there are valuable nuggets that you will be able to gleam from this book.

Mikail Gorbachev tells people that rumors of his death are untrue

Mikail Gorbachev tells people that rumors of his death are untrue

It has been a rough couple of weeks for the Mariner

When the Seattle Mariners came back from the all-star break on July 19,2013, the second half of their started on a tragic note. Their manager Eric Wedge was hospitalized with dizzy spells brought on by unknown cause. The club was expecting it to only be a day or two while he recovered in the hospital.

With hopes running high for a quick return of their manager the Mariners kept their winning ways going under the fill-in manager Robby Thompson, usually the bench coach. After a few days of test it was revealed that the dizziness was the result of a mild stroke that Mr. Wedge had during the all-star break. The news devastated the ball-club and that started showing on the field.

After Mr. Wedge was released from the hospital he was order to stay at home and rest. This meant that he wouldn't be going on the East Coast road trip with the team. The teams morale was running low at the news and it showed on the field with erratic play. The Mariners playing and a few bad calls lead to a 4 game losing streak before the team rallied to win the final 2 games on the road trip.

The team arrived back in Seattle on the 5th of this month to the news that Mr. Wedge was still on bed rest and wouldn't be joining the team on the home stand. The team woes continued as errors, lack of hitting, bad pitching and a few bad calls equaled losing the first 2 games against Toronto. A visit from Mr. Wedge did give the team a much need boost and they were able to eke out a win in the final game of the series against the Blue Jays.

Today, the team has the day off before the Brewers come into town for a 3 game series. Mr. Wedge will remain on home rest for the rest of this home stand and probably the 9-game road trip that will take the Mainers to Florida, Texas and California.

In the time of Eric Wedge's absence the Seattle Mariners have won 7 out 15.

Review: Twisted by Andrea Kane

Twisted by Andrea Kane is a suspenseful crime thriller that will keep glued to ever page until the end. As a reader you will want to savor every word as you lose yourself in this strange and twisted story involve murders, kidnapping, gangs and sex. You will find yourself getting caught up as you attempt to solve the case before ex-FBI agent Sloane Burbank and FBI special agent Derek Parker.
As the book starts it is approximately a year since Sloane Burbank walked away from the FBI after suffering a life threatening injury to her hand. After finishing up on her latest self-defense seminar she gets a call to solve the disappearance of a childhood friend that has been gone for almost a year. Ms. Burbank soon finds that there is more to this than a simple missing person case and she must face a past that she wanted to leave behind. That past includes FBI special agent Derek Parker who is the agent-in-charge of the original case and the injury that caused her to leave the FBI. Once she joins forces with special agent Parker the case becomes even more complicated when Ms. Burbank realizes that she is now not only the hunter but the hunted. It soon becomes a ace against time as Sloane and Derek try to solve the case before Sloane becomes a victim.
Ms. Kane does a terrific job of bringing a variety of highly believable characters to life in the pages of her book. Their is the main character Sloane Burbank the former FBI agent that now teaches self-defense courses in Krav Maga as well as being a crime consultant, Derek Parker the former Army ranger turned FBI agent, professor Lillian Doyle, Luke Doyle and many more. Each character, whether in the story throughout the book or just in a few pages, is richly developed with background and the piece they play in the storyline.
It is a thrilling story that I would recommend to anyone that is a fan of crime novels, mysteries or suspense of any kind. You will find the hours pass quickly as you get involved.

The Mariners squeak by the Cubs

The last couple of months have seen just about everything go wrong that can go wrong, for the Seattle Mariners. There have been injury’s to key players, bad calls, bad fielding, players being sent down or released, new players being called up and even bad pitching from the normally stellar King Felix. Many of us were starting to think that our team was destined to never win another game. Tonight was a game to make us think that their fortune might finally be changing for the better.
The game started shortly after 7:00 p.m. PT as Hasashi Iwakuma took to the mound to face the Chicago Cubs. The 1st inning went just as we have come to expect from Iwakuma as he gets the first player to ground out to short. The next player flies out to right field. The third player up in the inning strikes out to end the top of the 1st. The Mariners half of the inning starts with Endy Chavez stepping up and flies out. Nick Franklin is next up and he strikes out. Kyle Seager steps up next and he strikes out to end the The 2nd inning sees Iwakuma running into some trouble as Sariano starts the inning off with a single. The next batter lines out. Then Sweeney steps up to the plate where he hits a ball into the right field corner for an RBI triple. Then an errant throw from Endy Chavez coupled with a fluke bounce allows Sweeney to score. The game gets back on track as the next two batters ground out and strike out to end the top of the 2nd. In the Mariners half of the inning Kendrys Morales starts out by striking out. Raul Ibanez is next up and he grounds out. Jason Bay walks to give the Mariners a man on base. Dustin Ackley steps up to the plate and fouls out to end the 2nd.
The 3rd inning goes much better for Iwakuma as the first batter grounds out. The next batter flies out. The third batter pops up to end the top of the inning. The Mariners half of the 3rd sees Mike Zunino step up and fly out. The newest Mariner Brad Miller steps up for his first at bat and lines out to end the 3rd.
The 4th starts off good for the Mariners as the first batter grounds out. The next batter strikes out for out number two. Rizzo is the next batter and he doubles making some trouble for Iwakuma. The next batter strikes out to end the top of the inning. The bottom of the inning starts out good for the Mariners as Nick Franklin steps in and hits a double. Kyle Seager strikes out for the first out. Next it is Kendrys Morales and he strikes out. Raul Ibanez is up next and flies out to end the 4th.
The 5th inning goes smooth for Iwakuma as he gets the Cubs out in order again. In the bottom of the inning Jason Bay starts it off with a home run to cut the Cubs lead in half. Dustin Ackley is up next and he flies out. Mike Zunino steps up next and grounds out. Brad miller steps in for his second at bat and walks. Back to the top of the order for Endy Chavez and he pops out to end the 5th.
The 6th sees Iwakuma once again get the Cubs in order. Nick Franklin starts off for the Mariners and pops out. Kyle Seager is next where he flies out. Kendrys Morales steps in and hits a single to give the Mariners some hope in the inning. Raul Ibanez steps in next and lines out to end the 6th.

The excitement isn't over though since the Mariners are having their first ever fireworks show at Safeco Field. The show is a spectacular 12 minute display showing some of the highlights from the 1995 season. At one point the fireworks erupt into a golden waterfall cascading over the edge of Safeco. The show came to a crescendo as the 1812 overture played and came to a great end as it looked like the stadium was exploding in one final display.
