DARPA sets final date for robotics challenge

Saturday afternoon DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Project Agency) announced that the finals of their robotics challenge will be held the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif on June 5&6, 2015. This is a 6 month extension past the original date that had the final round of the challenge to be held in December of this year. The reason for this extension is that DARPA is stepping up the rules and want the participants to have time to comply with these new rules.
"The trials were much more successful than we had expected," said Gill Pratt, DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) program director in a conference call. Consequently, DARPA plans to significantly "raise the bar" by increasing the difficulty of the tasks and further degrading the harshness of the environment.
Among these new restrictions are that all robot should be full self contained units meaning no power cords, fall arrestors or wired communication tethers. Human team members will not be able to rush out and assist their robots when they get stuck the way they did during the trails in December of 2013. All of the tests in the finals will have a 1 hour time limit which is a big reduction from the 4 hours that some of the robots were taking to complete their tasks in the trials. The last of these new rules is that human communication to the robots will be reduced meaning that the groups boost the programming and learning capabilities of their robots.
For the first time, teams will be empowered to exploit the cloud and crowd-augmented robotics, two highly promising research areas that allow onsite operators to leverage remote data, computing and human resources,” Mr. Pratt stated on DARPA's website.
In early April of 2012 DARPA first announced that they in October of 2012 they would be launching a robotics challenge. The purpose of this would be find a robot capable of preforming complex task in hostile environments after natural of man-made disasters. One of the biggest reasons that made it apparent there was a need for such a competition was the tsunami, earthquake and nuclear disaster that took place in Japan in 2011.

In December of 2013 DAPRA held trails where they picked 11 teams that would receive further funding and compete in the finals. These trails were made up of 8 tasks consisting of turning a valve, opening doors, climbing ladders, navigating debris, carrying and hooking up a hose, cutting a hole in a wall, removing debris and driving a car.

'The Machine' could change computing

At the HP Development conference, in Las Vegas, earlier this month Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman and CTO Martin Fink announced a new a project, codenamed “the machine”, that will change the computer industry. According to Ms. Whitman and Mr. Fink “the machine” will radically speed up processing time and reduce the energy. If this project succeeds it will change the 70 year-old “von neumann” architecture, name for John Von Neiman.
"[The computer] will be able to compute much faster with huge amounts of data," says Ms Whitman. "It will also take up a lot less space and pull a lot less energy."
When 'the machine' comes to fruition it will integrate ROM(read only memory) and RAM(random access memory) that will right away speed up computing by eliminating the need for some of the back and forth communication between temporary memory and storage. Another big change is that instead of copper wires that use electronic pulse to send date around, that is responsible for much of the energy use and heat production, and use light photons.
"It's a big bet. We're taking a lot of the chips in the Las Vegas analogy and putting them on red."
Ms. Whitman is dedicating 75% oh Hewlett-Packard's research & development department, HP labs, to bring 'he machine' to market by the end of the decade. HP labs has already been working on the project for the past couple of years with Mr. Fink first took over as head of HP labs. In that time they have made some progress although just how much is unknown.
"Our industry is undergoing one the biggest shifts I've seen in my career," Ms Whitman says.
If this works it could turn around the trend that has seed a migration from desktops and laptops for mobile devices that rely more on cloud computing. That would not only help bring Hewlett-Packard, to its once prominent status, but also other computer manufactures that have seen their revenues drop from the mobile trend.

Today we celebrate the one year anniversary of the Curiosity Rover. You are probably saying didn't we celebrate that in August? You would be if you are going by the Earth's calendar. On the Martian calender a year equals 687 days to make this the 1 year anniversary that was scheduled to be the winking down period of the 23 month mission.
Ever since the mobile lab, Curiosity Rover, landed on the Red planet on August 5, 2012 we have been anxiously await news to hear what it has found. We all wanted to know if it will find signs that Mars could have supported some form of life? If that life is still thriving on the planet or long gone? Then, in September of 2013 came word the Curiosity has found water in the surface soil on Mars. The news made our imaginations run wild since a small amount of water on the surface probably means there is more deeper and that gives us a good chance for life.
"Our goal over that time was to find a habitable environment, and we did," said Ashwin Vasavada, deputy project scientist, in a NASA video. "We found a lake bed on Mars that we drilled into and found the ingredients and conditions that could have supported microbial life, if life ever was on Mars."
With that original goal meet NASA has given their rover an extension for its anniversary present. The new goal of the mission now is to figure out what changed to make Mars the planet it is now. To reach the new goal Curiosity will continue on the trek to Mount Sharp where it will be doing analysis on the rocks to try and find out what changed.
"We think the layered rocks there have captured the major climate changes in Mars' history," said Vasavada. "We can't wait to get there and figure it all out, but it's going to take a lot of driving."

Microsoft goes android with new smartphone

When Redmond-based Microsoft's purchase of Nokia's mobile division was finalized in April of this year there was a question about the fate of the Nokia X android-based smartphone. Nokia's fromer CEO and now Microsoft executive Stephen Elop assured us that the smartphone line would continue. Then, Over the weekend Redmond-based Microsoft hinted that they would be coming out with a new version of the Nokia X smartphone. Earlier this morning Microsoft did indeed come out with their first android-based smartphone.
The new Nokia X2 bumps up the display size to 4.3” from 4”, The process will go from a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon to the 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 and the RAM will go from 512MB to 1GB. Other feature of the X2 are a 45-megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, talk time of up to 13 hours at 3G speeds and up to 10 hours at 2G speed.
Lumia is our primary smartphone strategy. At the same time we believe that everybody should have easy and direct access to the most popular Microsoft services, such as Outlook, OneDrive, Skype, and now also OneNote through Nokia Store,” said Jussi Nevanlinna, Microsoft vice president of marketing for mobile phones, in a blog post. “More people are now connected to the Microsoft cloud through Nokia X.”
Even though the Nokia X2 is an android-based its interface looks more like a Windows 8 smartphone. Beside the tile look on the home screen another similarity with Windows 8 is the all apps and search screen that can be accessed by swiping to the left. There is also a third screen called fastlane that can be accessed by swiping right from the home screen. At the bottom of the screen there are “back” and “home” buttons. With the “back” button you can access your past actions or all open apps. The “home” button as the name implies will take you back to your home screen from wherever you are on your smartphone.

Review: Terror Train

From the mind of A. Henry Keene The Terror Train is wonderfully twisted anthology of train inspired horror short stories and poems by various authors. From the departure call we are brought into a world where demonic steel dragons ride the rail carrying cursed souls to suffer through the fates in store for them. You will spends hours absorbed in each story and poem as they conger up vivid imagery of ghost doomed to relive a nightmare of their own creation, murderous creatures and demon-possessed trains that feed on human souls. As you continue your ride you find your senses permeated the sights, sounds and smells of the horrors that wait in shadows of your mind.
The dialog that the characters in a story speak can be a big part of the reading experience and in Terror Train the sometimes harsh and even vulgar language just adds to richness of the situations that these seemingly ordinary people find themselves thrust into either by chance, a bad decision or twist of fate.
As the theme of the book implies trains a often the main characters in these storie and poems. Some of the best examples are the living, demonic train in Lonely Train a Comin' that infused itself with its past victim only to uses them to attack current victims or the evil Lilith that consumes its victims to power it on its journeys.
A. Henry Keene & Kista Clark Grabowski did a great job of editing this book to keep the readers imagination reeling from beginning to end. The way they mix these stories and poems you on edge not know whether the next train will take them to find a lost love or claim your soul to power it to travel on to find its next victim.

I would highly recommend this to anyone that is a fan of anthology series, such as, Tales from the dark side, Creepshow, The whisler, enjoys reading the likes of Edger Allen Poe or just hearing scary stories around a camp fire. If you fit into any of those categories then Terror Train you will find yourself reading and re-reading each entry in this thrilling book.

Will Microsoft give us an android smartphone?

When Redmond-based Microsoft finalized their purchase of Nokia's mobile division, in April of this year, there was one question on everyone's mind. Will Microsoft still manufacture the Nokia X android smartphone? According to former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, now an executive with Microsoft, and two teasers on Nokia's blog the answer would seem to be yes they will keep the X in production.
If the Redmond-based giant truly is coming out with a new version of the low-end smartphone it will be the first time Microsoft will manufacture a mobile device that is not based on a mobile version of their own Windows platform. That being said though the Redmond-based giant has had a long history of signing deals with manufacturers of android smartphones.
One thing that sets the Nokia X apart from other android smartphones is the interface. The Nokia X will have modified windows tile look to it. A possible why they would give it such a differ look is that customer that buy the Nokia X could transition over to a pure Windows phone Of course it could also be just to make the smartphone stand out from the crowd or to let customers know that 'hey, the smartphone may be android but we are Microsoft'.
According to leaked documents technology blog BGR(boy genius report) The new Nokia X smartphone will likely come with a 4.3-inch display with 800x400 resolution, be powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core snapdragon processor, have 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera for video chatting.
