After 12 years Tom Szkutak is getting
set to step down from the office of CFO (chief executive officer) at
Seattle-based Amazon. It is a position that Mr. Szkutak has held
since he joined the Seattle-based giant in October of 2002. He will
remain at the company for the next 9 months transferring his duties
over to Brian Olsavsky who will take over in June of 2015.
“It’s
been a privilege for me to work with so many talented people who are
continually inventing on behalf of customers, and now I look forward
to spending more time with my family and other outside interests,”
said Tom
Szkutak in a pres
release. “I’ve
worked very closely with Brian
Olsavsky over
the past 12 years and have seen firsthand how talented he is, and I
have confidence that he will be a great CFO for Amazon.com..”
During his time as
CFO, Amazon has seen itself grow from a small etailor to the large
multimedia behemoth that it today. Some of the most notable areas of
growth under Mr. Sxkutak's tenure have been: AWS (Amazon web
services), the Kindle line of e-readers, tablets and smartrphone, the
Prime network and dozens of acquisitions. One of the biggest
criticisms has been the small profits that the company has
experienced during the last few years of the rapid expansion.
Before coming to
Amazon, Mr.
Szkutak attended Boston University where he earned a bachelors
degree in finance. He then went on to work at General Electric where
he held a number of positions over his 20 years that saw him rise to
the rank of CFO from September of 2001- September of 2002. Mr.Szkutak
is also an advisory for Amazon subsidiary A9.com,
product search engine.
Before joining
Amazon in April of 2002 Brian
Olsavsky earned a bachelors of science degree in mechanical
engineering from Penn State University and a master of business
administration degree in finance from Carnegie Mellon University.
